SIR - I was one of the London children that were evacuated to Harpenden on September 1, 1939.
I occasionally visit Harpenden for a day (nostalgia) and when I get out at the station, relive that march down Station Road to the Town Hall to be "selected".
After a poor start, I was billeted with a lovely family and treated as one of their own. I lived with them for four years. They were very happy years.
I am now 82 and can't believe that this part of my life happened 70 years ago.
