SIR - So, it is now clear that our Herts County Councillors "invested" large sums of our money - that is, taxpayers' money - in various Icelandic banks well after the credit ratings of these institutions had been downgraded. This, despite their collective assertions that they had been monitoring the situation closely and ensuring the best return for the taxpayer.

Surely, in failing to take notice of the current credit-worthiness of these institutions before depositing huge sums of money with them, our councillors have failed in their duty of care to the taxpayer and so should be held personally liable for the loss. Such negligence should not go unpunished.
