SIR, - So Cllr Melvyn Teare, St Albans District Council's portfolio holder for culture and heritage, does not consider the Old Courtroom in the Town Hall "the most appropriate location" for the Bookfair (Herts Advertiser, November 27). Why?
The Bookfair is always well-attended, offers a wide range of books at reasonable prices and attracts many customers, some of whom will shop and eat in St Albans during their visit to the Bookfair. Isn't this what the city needs? Why should Richard Child of Paton Books "look elsewhere" when the old Town Hall, centrally situated, has proved a popular venue in the past and is valued locally as well as further afield?
I do not know what is Cllr Teare's experience of culture and heritage but he seems a little lacking in down-to-earth commonsense.
The Bookfair is good for the people of St Albans and good for the city's traders.
