SIR, - The railways always get such bad press, so here is a good bit.

After cycling in Scotland I booked a sleeper home for me and my bike from Aberdeen to Euston. I booked four days ahead and, with my senior railcard, it cost me £40 for dinner, bed and small breakfast. No driving. No waiting at airports. The rail staff were very helpful and a very pleasant time was enjoyed.
