SIR, - Recently I had occasion to send my son a letter containing a birthday card, M&S gift card and receipt for same. Unfortunately, when he received this he found only the birthday card and the receipt but no gift card.

Consequently I bought another card and thought I was making it safe by taping up the envelope and sending it by recorded delivery from another area. This time he received nothing. Waiting an appropriate time, I contacted the GPO in the area. I have since been told that there is no responsibility on their part to compensate me at all but they sent me six first-class stamps as a token of good will and to cover my postage. The lesson of this story is not to trust recorded delivery. Apparently I should have sent it by the special delivery service.
