Hitchin and Harpenden MP Bim Afolami has sat down with the National Farmers’ Union to discuss their future after Brexit.
During the earliest harvest since 1976, farmers met Mr Afolami at the Sandridgebury home of National Farmers’ Union county chairman Jamie Burrows.
Jamie said: “The wheat I am harvesting now goes into the food chain to produce bread. We produce an astounding 11m loaves of bread a day in the UK and 85 per cent of this total is made using home-grown wheat.
“We need MPs’ backing to ensure farmers can continue to deliver all of this for future generations once we leave the European Union.”
Bim said: “It was fantastic to meet with Jamie and other local farmers, who are immensely proud of the work they do growing our food and managing the countryside that all my constituents can enjoy.”
They also discussed how rural crime affects farm businesses.
