SIR - I am writing to warn your readers about bike thefts from St Albans City train station. I had my bike stolen recently and when I reported it to the station supervisor I was told that there had been a number of thefts lately.
The bike racks are under CCTV surveillance, although the staff at the station do not apparently have access to the footage.
In order to take this forward, I had to contact British Transport Police, who then request the footage from Network Rail.
I am waiting to hear the results of this but it does seem an overly complicated process. If we are going to have all of these CCTV cameras, then surely we should make it as straightforward as possible for the relevant authorities to access the footage and put it to good use? Just when we need to promote more cycling, it would be a shame if people were put off cycling to the station because of theft. To all biking commuters, please ensure you lock your bikes (I had used a cable lock) as securely as possible!
