KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE FROM THE FLU BUG
Do I really need a flu jab?
YES! If you get your flu jab, you are less likely to catch it and spread it to your family. It reduces the risk of catching common types of flu, as much as 70 to 80 per cent in healthy adults under 65.
Being highly contagious, flu can be passed on by infected people sneezing or coughing and transmitting the virus through the air. A person sneezing and not covering their mouth can propel 40,000 droplets of moisture and millions of germs over a distance of over 30ft.
Anybody that’s had flu will tell you that it’s far worse than a cold, leaving you bedridden.
Symptoms normally start a few days after being infected. Those who have the virus typically begin to feel better within a week or so, however you may feel fatigued for much longer.
Typical flu symptoms include:
? A high temperature of 38C or above
? Aching limbs and joints
? General tiredness and weakness
? A sore throat
? A dry, chesty cough
If you are aged 65 years or over, suffer from a long-term chronic illness or have a weak immune system, then flu can develop life-threatening complications like pneumonia or a chest infection.
You are eligible for the FREE NHS flu jab if you are:
? Aged 65 years or over
? Suffering from a long term chronic illness e.g. asthma, heart disease etc
? Live in a long-stay residential care home
? Main carer for the elderly or disabled
If you would prefer not to take precious time off work and would like to protect yourself and your family from infection, contact your local Avicenna Pharmacy to book your flu jab so you can enjoy a flu-free winter.
