SIR, - May I say thank you to the Rotary Clubs of St Albans for another well-organised charity cycle ride through the leafy green lanes of Herts. On a beautiful, sunny day hundreds of cyclists of all shapes and sizes took to their bikes for a fun morning out, raising money for charities.

I wonder what happens to all those bikes for the rest of the year? It would be great if more people got the cycling habit and used their bikes regularly. If everyone with a bike swapped just one short car journey a week for a bike journey, it would make a difference. (If you feel a bit wobbly to begin with, practise on the Alban Way or on a quiet road - you'll soon love it).

More people cycling means less pollution and congestion on our roads and a healthier, leaner population.

All we need is the political will to make it happen. It happens in other UK cities. It could happen in St Albans. Tell your local councillors you are waiting to see real improvements for cyclists on our local roads.
