SIR, - On November 3, 2005, I was driving home to St Albans from Harpenden at approximately 23:45pm when I saw a large cat. It ran from fields and trees in a dark area with no street lights in front of my car to the other side of road. I slammed my brakes on. My car has xenon headlamps which are extremely bright and the extraordinary thing was this cat was not frightened at all but just sat and stared at me, locking eyes. At first I thought it was a young lioness and reported it to the police but after looking up photos on the web it was apparent it was a puma - often mistaken for a young lioness. The cat was a sandy colour. I feel I was one of the lucky ones to have experienced such an encounter with a beautiful animal and have since then been constantly on the lookout for another sighting. I am a chauffeur and spend hours on the road, night and day, and hope that one day a repeat sighting will come my way. KIMBERLEY NAUNTON, Gresford Close, St Albans.
