SIR, - If the Tories who control Herts County Council want to avoid the opprobrium of being the nasty party, they would be well advised to back-track on their disgraceful desire to close the day care centre at the Jubilee Centre in St Albans without providing a suitable alternative.
They have clearly set their sights on disposing of this, the best refuge for severely-disabled people we have ever known. They seem blind to the fact that for the users of the service, this is about the only thing that can give them some form of life.
The county council's "alternatives" of offering places that are far away or lack any of the facilities of the Jubilee Centre are pitiful, and they ignore at their peril the feelings of the 5,000 or more mostly non-disabled voters who signed the petition organised by Cllr Roma Mills.
