SIR, - I would like to reply to the letter about cyclists "sharing the road" (Herts Advertiser, May 29). As a pedestrian walking miles every week along the pavements of St Albans accompanied by my guide dog puppy, I was dismayed by this letter. It talked of drivers having scant regard for cyclists as a reason for cycling on footpaths. I find that cyclists on footpaths have scant regard for pedestrians.
I cannot count the number of times cyclists have raced past me on the path narrowly avoiding a collision with me or the dog. They never seem to think that I or the dog could possibly deviate slightly from a straight line directly into their path and be seriously injured. Perhaps they do not realise that as cycles are practically silent, a pedestrian may be totally unaware of the presence of danger until it is too late.
C. Stewart has avoided danger from cars by leaving the road and using the path. I wonder where pedestrians can move to to avoid the danger posed by cyclists.
