SIR, - First Herts County Council decides to close down the day service at the Jubilee Centre despite the objections of users and carers, supported by more than 5,000 local residents who signed the carers' petition.

We now learn that the residents of Vesta Lodge have only just found out that the county has decided to relocate a 10-place day service to the coffee lounge in their home (Herts Advertiser, June 26) without so much as a "by your leave".

I do not suppose that the elderly residents will be reassured by the comment from the representative of Quantum Care, which runs the home, who confirmed that "when a decision had been reached, the matter would be discussed with residents, relatives and staff at Vesta Lodge". Won't it be rather late if discussions are left until after the decision is made? Still that is exactly what happened with the Jubilee.

CLLR ROMA MILLS,

St Albans District Council.
