SIR, - St Albans new recycling programme is failing. We were informed that of the new recycling programme earlier in the year and were told that on February 8 kerbside collections of glass, plastics, metal and newspapers would commence, followed a week later by the collection of cardboard. Needless to say three weeks on no one piece of recycling has been collected.

Phoning the council to complain proves pointless as you are told not to worry, it's teething problems and recycling will be collected at some point. Or they say: "Don't stress, it's not important."

Well I do worry and I am stressed. What will happen in May when we are due to leave out cooked food waste? Perhaps the rats will not be able to feed as they will have to climb over a mountain of recyclable material.

If the council want the residents of this city to take recycling seriously then they must provide the service to enable us to comply with our side of the agreement.

DAVID RICE,

Palfrey Close, St Albans.
