SIR - With reference to the letter from Robert Bolt (Herts Advertiser, March 20), I would like to correct some inaccuracies. Safety cameras are used in Herts to reduce casualties, not to make money. The Safety Camera Partnership (Herts County Council, Herts Police, Her Majesty's Courts Service and the Highways Agency) does not make any money from fines collected but is financed by a fixed grant from Central Government. This means that it makes no difference to its finances if it catches one speeding driver or 1,000 - obviously we would prefer it if drivers stuck to the speed limit and no-one at all was caught speeding.

The county does use vehicle-activated signs where appropriate - in fact there are 90 throughout Herts.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR STUART PILE,

Executive Member for Transport, Environment & Rural Affairs.
