SIR, - While it's a shame the Woolworths store in St Peter's Street, is closing, it does provide a great opportunity to resolve an ongoing issue within St. Albans.

Some years ago, the district council identified that the city centre required a supermarket. Tesco's conveniently interpreted this as meaning a huge superstore was required on the corner of Alma Road and London Road, not in the city centre!

With the closing of the Woolworths store, a suitably-sized retail space is now available in the city centre. I therefore look forward to reading that Tesco's are leading the race to occupy the vacant space, and given their clout and resources, I fully expect them to triumph and open a store there fairly soon.

JAMES CRAIGEN,

Orient Close, St Albans.
