SIR, - Janet Gribble brought to your readers attention (Herts Advertiser, December 11) the distress caused by two men snatching a handbag from a lady in a quiet residential area in Harpenden.

This case has several similarities to a case in December three or four years ago when two ladies walking to a service at St Nicholas Church in Harpenden were waylaid in a quiet road and a handbag snatched. Both ladies were wearing their Red Cross uniforms.

One lady received a broken arm and the case was reported to the police and was known to them at HQ in Welwyn Garden City.

I believe the case was reported in the Herts Advertiser.

Can the police tell us whether this is an event that happens every week in the area or only in December and do similar robberies take place in Watford, Stevenage and Luton?

Clearly the culprits avoid crowded areas covered by cameras but what other advice is there?

DEREK MORRIS.
