SIR - I refer to your article re the rail user held for two hours (Herts Advertiser, June 19). I am afraid that I have no sympathy for Mr Daniel Butler. FCC's terms and conditions of travel clearly state that each passenger must ensure that they have a correct ticket for the entire journey before travelling or they are liable to pay a penalty fare.

As someone who has previously used the service, Mr Butler should have been aware of this and his excuse that he was in a hurry is not a mitigant. It would appear that the inspectors took a hard line, however one can hardly blame them for not accepting Mr Butler's offer to provide verbal confirmation of his address - I can't think of any area of business in which this kind of verification would be accepted!

As a regular commuter, I applaud FCC's efforts in maintaining high levels of revenue collection - how long will it take passengers to learn that they must obtain the correct ticket before travelling or suffer the consequences.
