SIR - If Geoff Ackroyd's (Herts Advertiser November 19) critics would care to look at their copies of Harpenden Town Council leaflet 'Renewed Threat to Harpenden's Green Belt' on the back page under the map, they will find the following sentence: 'Failure to respond will effectively signify to the district council your agreement to the strategy.'

I am informed that there are 11,684 homes in Harpenden - 2,199 voted against the building of 300 homes and four voted in favour so that makes 9,481 homes signifying to the district council their agreement to the strategy plus four who have voted already in favour, making a total of 9,485.

So there you go Geoff, you are no longer in a minority of four but in a huge majority of 9,485.

Shouldn't be a bit surprised when the 300 homes are built if they don't name a road or close after you. Ackroyd Close sounds cool man.

But do not be fooled by this political ploy whilst we are all arguing and getting hot under the collar.

The clique down at the Town Hall are busy flogging off our green-field site at Westfield which was allotments for something in excess of £1 million to developers.

This is the third such allotment site sold off since cultivating my first allotment in Harpenden in 1953.

If Harpenden Town Council had been fortunate enough in owning the land in Area of Search 8 on our behalf, would they still have opposed the building of 300 homes?

I'm sure their chums would have been rubbing their hands.
