SIR, - I read with sad regret about the approved demolition of the former Odeon cinema in London Road. St Albans does not need more flats. St Albans is full.

I have lived in this city for over 40 years and have seen many changes occur. I am not against progress and development as I am in the building industry myself. But I do oppose this growing trend of ripping down any building - listed or not - in order to squeeze as many dwellings as possible on the commuter belt. I cannot believe that the Odeon could not have been saved for the future generations, but hey, since when have the residents of St Albans got what they really want? And I'm sure that Tesco will eventually also get permission to build the unfeasible supermarket that we do not need.

If any property developers are reading this, why not apply for permission to purchase the clock tower and convert it into a penthouse flat. I'm sure you stand a good chance of getting it.

PATRICK HALTON,

Wilstone Drive, St Albans.
