SIR, - Readers may have heard about the school from Stoke which had planned to go on a "jolly" at council tax payers expense. Well, it's pretty similar in Herts. Recently 20 head teachers went on a residential "meeting" in a five-star hotel in Windsor at a cost of £450 per head or £9,000 in total.
You might like to know also that Herts County Council provides free internet service in its libraries. There are almost 500 free computer terminals across the county. How much does this cost? If you charged users £1 a day you could raise £25,000 a week or £1.3m a year. Three quarters of UK households have access to the internet; in Herts it must be higher. This seems a waste.
Incidently have you been to a library recently? People shouting into mobiles, noisily playing computer games and little kids running amok. They seem to resemble a cross between an internet cafe, amusement arcade, social club and creche!
