SIR, - Despite Herts County Council setting up a bogus scrutiny committee to avoid the problem of secondary school pupils not getting any of the schools of their choice, this year Wheathampstead kids have been well and truly shafted again.

What does the county council intend to do with the additional children who will soon be arriving on the proposed housing estate being built on the site of the current Wheathampstead Development Centre? Which, incidentally used to be a secondary school, still has excellent facilities and could easily be reutilised as a secondary school.

But no, I guess the county would rather make more money by selling the land to developers who will cram as many houses on the site as possible, without any thought to the impact on the village, and then go on to waste the money on more useless projects, destroying the Green Belt area in the process.

Well done Herts County Council. Yet another glaring example of the short-sighted, gormless mismanagement we have to live with. If they were a privately-owned business, they would have gone under years ago.

Currently many Wheathampstead children are expected to travel to Hatfield! Where next? They should be ashamed of themselves.

MIKE SEALE,

Butterfield Road, Wheathampstead.
