SIR, - I was very pleased to read (Herts Advertiser, October 16) that common sense and sound judgement have prevailed, with the Heritage Lottery Committee throwing out the ludicrous bid for the funding of unwanted and unwarranted "improvements" to Verulamium Park in St Albans.

I am also pleased that my letter to the Heritage Lottery Committee, and those of others who objected to the scheme, was not sent in vain. To suggest that the loss of the bid was perhaps due to the prevailing economic climate is simply a failure to acknowledge that the plan has absolutely no merit.

It would be by far the best thing now for the district council, together with its "experienced consultants" and other supporters of the scheme, to cut the local tax payers' losses and put the so-called Masterplan where it belongs - in the bin.

Better still, recycle it to heat the council offices along with all the other hot air.

Wingfield, Beds.
