SIR, - On reading the latest Herts Advertiser I note that Peter Neal, Common Keeper for Bricket Wood, is due to retire and that the council have decided not to replace him. This I found very hard to believe.

Peter Neal has done an extremely excellent job on keeping his eye on any untoward happenings that have occurred over the past years. To now not have a Common Keeper to carry on his good work is unbelievable.

So who do the council think will watch over these woods? There have been numerous fires, falling trees, path obstructions, debris, motorbikers churning up the paths, horseriders keeping to the correct paths - all these need to be monitored. And of course the wildlife needs to be constantly checked - monkjacks, butterflies, bats, birds. Councillors take note - we need a Common Keeper.

Chris Montgomery,

Resident and dog walker of Bricket Wood, Address supplied.
