SIR - What wonderful news that the Odeon cinema in London Road is almost certain to re-open.
Located as it is on a main route into the city and close to the railway station and bus and Green Line routes I am sure it will kick start the sorely needed regeneration of this part of St Albans (minus an unwanted supermarket, thank you).
Let all of us who are able support this venture in spirit and financially and make it the success it deserves to be.
The story of the cinema site demonstrates, in the way that the restoration of the St Albans South signal box did, how vital it is that historic buildings in the district are not demolished while there is public support for them.
I will rely on the Herts Advertiser to keep me informed of the progress of this important project.
London Road, St Albans
SIR - What an exciting development for St Albans to read in your paper that James Hannaway has finalised negotiations on the old Odeon.
Anyone who has been to The Rex in Berkhamsted will know why it has been described as probably Britain's most beautiful cinema by the BBC. The art deco decoration in the auditorium and in the coffee shop at the entrance is outstanding with real cups and saucers. The seating inside is probably the most comfortable I have sat on and free cushions are provided. The layout is also unusual with tables and chairs provided on the bottom rows and bar facilities available.
The selection of films to see is outstanding and caters for all tastes. I am sure the art deco facade in St Albans will be restored and hopefully decorated in similar colours.
St Albans needs something special like this to give it an uplift. I only hope that the money can be found in these difficult times.
