Jon Meakes wants to stay at St Albans City a bit longer

He has now been in caretaker charge for three games and has seen his charges return five points from three games.

It is a sequence that builds on the six wins from seven that marked the end of the David Noble reign and has thrust Saints firmly into the play-off positions in National League South.

And he would like to stick around.

"It is an option," he admitted. "The chairman and I have been talking, he's in Sweden at the moment but he's still phoning me. 

"We just want to keep the continuity. There's no rush and at the moment the boys are comfortable and they don’t want change either as long as I can maintain that.  

"Yeah so I’m enjoying it 

"We're on a run. We want to be hard to beat, but more importantly, we want to keep adding points to it.  

"So we've got ourselves into a play-off position, but it's not just about getting in there, it’s about maintaining it. 

"Can we push on with another couple of good results that just builds the gap between the teams that are trying to get in there?

"Suddenly it becomes a bit more comfortable in there and then you can look further. 

"There's loads of games to come and there's going to be loads of twists. We’ve just got to keep putting points on the board." 

The latest result was a 0-0 draw away to Hampton & Richmond Borough on Tuesday.

It leaves them sixth in the table with 15 games to go, one point behind their hosts but having played a game more.

The result was one Meakes was happy with but admitted they could have grabbed more with a late onslaught.

"It was good point," he said. "Away from home, you’d want a point to start with and another clean sheet shows we’re tight at the back as well. 

"But we've dominated the game and that's what's pleasing for me. 

"The possession that we kept, it's not just possession for possession sake. We've actually moved it around and we've got in behind them and put lots of balls into the danger area. 

"It just hasn't fallen for us.

"We're a young group and they've been learning. 

"It's about knowing where we are and we talked in there about game management and about knowing where we are in the game. 

"We don't have to keep playing out, we can take the risk out of it. 

"The only negative of the first half for me was those last few minutes. 

"But overall, we went up the hill, into the wind and we’ve pinned them in. 

"I wanted more of the same after the break. We didn’t want to go long [with the wind at our backs] as it would just go out like it did for them. 

"And we did that and stretched them. 

"We were probing and we should have had two pens, one for a save on the line with hands. 

"It’s one of those, small margins."
