AFTER their success at the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, the shanty men of Port Isaac are coming to the Alban Arena next Friday, February 8.

Performing shanties and Cornish folk songs, Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends consist of five baritones, two top tenors, two second tenors and a bass.

Each and every member of the band is or has been fishermen, life boatmen or coastguard – as well as builders, artisans, hoteliers and shopkeepers – in Port Isaac.

Supporting them at the Arena are brand new Herts-based vocal trio Said The Maiden playing traditional folk music using a range of instruments including fiddle, accordion, guitar, ukulele, tin whistle, cajon, and shaky-egg.

The female group were one of the top four bands as voted for by the public for this year’s Music City Unsigned 2 and will also be performing live in March at the Arena.

The first film instalment of the three-part adaptation of the Tolkein novel can be seen at 7.30pm from Tuesday to Thursday, February 5 to 7, and at 2.30pm on Wednesday, February 6,

Set in Middle Earth 60 years before The Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, tells the story of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is convinced by the wizard Gandalf (Ian Mckellen) to accompany 13 spirited Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the Dragon.

Tickets for films matinees are £5 and for evenings are £7 or £5 for concessions.
