It’s a whole new world out there... An Avengers world.

(Panini Books)

Having crafted a new team of Avengers which boasts around 16 members, each carefully selected for their different abilities and expertise in order to ensure readiness for any kind of threat, Tony (Iron Man) Stark and Steve (Captain America) Rogers now put them to work…

Alongside the interlinked Avengers and New Avengers series, this latest addition to the staple draws on Jonathan Hickman’s inspired concept of an “Avengers World”, a planet protected by the forces of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from menaces within and without, working alongside the peacekeeping organisation of SHIELD to act as a first response to anything which might challenge our way of life.

But whereas the other main two Avengers books are focused on Hickman’s overall story arc, this series is more self-contained, and offers the opportunity for some of the team’s lesser characters to enjoy their time in the spotlight, including Cannonball and Sunspot, Smasher and Shang Chi…

The scientific terrorist organisation A.I.M (Advanced Ideas Mechanics) gained a place on the UN Security Council after establishing an island nation state, but now their new base is evolving at an unforeseen rate into something alien. Meanwhile the criminal island of Madripoor has been flown off on the back of a dragon, and ghosts from the past are rising in the City of the Dead… Just another day in the lives of the Avengers.

Written by Nick Spencer and Jonathan Hickman, Avengers World doesn’t have the feel of a standard spin-off title created to bleed more revenue from a franchise, but instead carries a weight and importance to proceedings which suggests it remains a crucial addition to the Avengers line.

St Albans Beer Festival

If a beer festival is a celebration, then this year’s St Albans event is a loud shout of joy. It marks the 21st festival to be held at the Alban Arena and it proves the doomsters wrong who said back in the 1990s that the city had so many pubs – 55 at the time – that there was no need for a separate festival.
