A NEW film society planned for the autumn is getting underway with a meeting for any interested parties on Tuesday, April 13.

The new Harpenden Film Society will screen films from September on Tuesday evenings at the Public Halls which has facilities including tiered seating and a licensed bar.

Sean Gough, who is driving the creation of the society, said the aim was to provide a regular local venue for quality films without the need to drive to a multiplex cinema.

He went on: "There are many excellent films released every year that are slightly off the mainstream and do not get screened at the local multiplexes for long or at all. We aim to give local residents the option to see these films in Harpenden with a cinema atmosphere, excellent facilities and the ability to influence what is screened."

The first step is to form a committee to select the films, look after the finances and publicise the first season.

Tuesday's meeting is being held at 7.30pm in the Public Halls and anyone who is interested or who is unable to get to the meeting but would like details of the films to be screened can email sean@seangough.com
