A RECITAL on St Albans Cathedral’s renowned Harrison & Harrison organ is being given by Tom Winpenny, Assistant Master of the Music, at 3pm this Sunday afternoon.

His programme includes the Concerto in A minor by Vivaldi (arranged by Bach), music by the contemporary composer Judith Bingham, the rarely-performed Deux Esquisses by Marcel Dupré, and the Sonata on the 94th Psalm by German composer Julius Reubke, who died in 1858 at an early age.

The recital is the first in an occasional series of Sunday afternoon organ concerts at the Cathedral and Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music, said: “Organ music plays a huge part in the life of the Cathedral and throughout the city through the biennial International Organ Festival.

“These Sunday recitals will give an opportunity to hear a full-length organ concert on the recently-restored organ – which celebrates its 50th birthday this year – played by the Cathedral’s resident organists and other organists from around the UK.”

Recitalists later this year include Peter Holder, Organ Scholar at the Cathedral, Andrew Lucas and internationally-renowned recitalist Colin Walsh, himself a former Master of the Music at the Cathedral.

Sunday’s recital will last around 60 minutes and a retiring collection will be taken towards the work of the Cathedral music department.

Admission is free with a retiring collection. For further information contact the Cathedral Information Desk on 01727 860780.
