Drummer and composer Andrew Bain is being recorded for BBC Radio 3 when he appears at Herts Jazz Club this Sunday. (6)

He has recently embarked on his first nationwide tour with UK heavyweight pianist George Colligan, Thelonious Monk Competition winner Jon Irabagon on saxophone and Michael Janisch on the bass.

The aim of the transatlantic project is to capture the excitement and energy of New York City where they have all lived.

The gig will be broadcast on Jazz Now on December 12 and is a first for Herts Jazz Club.

Music begins at 7.30pm in the club which meets at the Hawthorne Theatre, Welwyn Garden City, and tickets in advance from are £3 students/£8 members/£10 concessions/£11 full.

On the door they are £5 students/£9 members/£12 concessions/£13 full.

* Herts Jazz Club is on the lookout for a new venue after learning that it can no longer have free use of the Hawthorne Theatre which has hosted over 200 gigs and six festivals since 2010.

Award-winning drummer Clark Tracey, artistic director of Herts Jazz, said, “We have had a fantastic six years at Campus West with brilliant support from all of the team there. We would love to stay here but simply cannot afford the proposed charges.

“It is such a shame that now that we are on the national jazz map, having established the most prestigious arts event in the county and with the prospect of becoming a regular recording and broadcasting venue for the BBC, we will have to relocate.”

He added: “We have already had talks with several possible new venues in the county but would like to hear from more if possible. For Sunday gigs, we need a capacity of 100-150 and for the annual festival a venue to seat 250-400 people.”

The club can be contacted via email at, via the Facebook page or via Twitter @hertsjazz.
