The music of Benny Goodman will figure prominently in a concert taking place in Welwyn Garden City this evening.

Benny and Beyond is Sunday night’s Herts Jazz Club gig in Screen 2 of the Garden City Cinema/Hawthorne Theatre complex at Campus West.

Using the classic clarinet and vibes-led quintet format, Peter Long’s ensemble will be revisiting some of the iconic treatments of jazz standards made famous by the great Benny Goodman and, in other parts of the show, investigating the possibilities of the line-up when applied to other, later idioms.

Alongside Air Mail Special, Avalon, and Flying Home, expect to hear the BG treatment applied to, amongst others, Horace Silver, Billy Strayhorn and Kool and the Gang.

Joining clarinetist Peter will be Anthony Kerr on vibes, Rob Barron on piano, Paul Morgan on bass and Clark Tracey on drums.

Advance tickets cost £3 students, £9 members, £11 concessions and £12 full.

Walk-ups are £5 students, £10 members, £13 concessions and £14 full.

• Book online at www.hertsjazz.co.uk/gigs.html or call the box office on 0300 3039 620.
