English rugby champions Saracens will have to battle past Welsh, Scottish and French opponents after the draw for the Heineken Cup was made in Lausanne.

They were placed in Pool 3 for rugby’s premier and newly-named European championship.

Glasgow Warriors, Lyon and Cardiff Blues provide the challenge.

It could have been worse with the group of death being Pool One, which pits Leinster, Wasps, Toulouse and Bath together.

The finals of both this and the European Challenge Cup will be held at the home of Newcastle United Football Club, St James’ Park, in May.

Saracens have plenty of history in this competition winning it in 2016 and 2017.

Last year’s campaign had its ups and downs with a postponed group game at home to Clermont due to snow a standout moment.

Their run ended in the semi-final in Dublin with a 38-16 defeat to eventual champions Leinster.
