MISSED opportunities proved to be the downfall as St Peter's were knocked out of the Herts Intermediate Cup by Harpenden Town Reserves.

The game was an even affair but it was the Saints who created the better scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, either their finishing let them down or good defensive play from the visitors denied them.

The visitors looked lively early on but rarely tested the Saints goalkeeper Chris Collings until his handling error gifted the visitors their first goal, with Scott applying the finishing touch.

The error was cancelled out when a back pass was miss-kicked by Harpenden goalkeeper Lord, presenting John Thompson with an easy tap in.

At 1-1 the Saints went on to create a number of goal-scoring opportunities. Good strikes from Craig Chapman and Thompson were denied as 'keeper Lord made up for his earlier mistake with two good saves.

Mark Savory missed a golden opportunity to give the Saints the lead as they continued to waste chances before the interval. Harpenden took the lead when Smith's free kick confused the Saints defence and Knock raced through unchallenged to fire home.

The second half was a scrappy affair, with both sides failing to keep hold of the ball.

Once again the Saints had more than their fair share of the possession and should have scored on at least two occasions with Danny Blyth and Mark Savory the guilty parties.

Harpenden held on for the win with St Peter's failure to convert their chances costing them dearly.

This Saturday sees St Peter's travel to Harpenden Rovers in the league. Kick off is 2pm.
