For the second time in 2018 St Albans Ladies were involved in an eight-goal thriller – drawing 4-4 away to Sherrardswood.

The previous match had been a 5-3 win over Northwood and after trailing three times in this one, the Saints were on their way to victory, only for the hosts to grab a last-minute equaliser.

The match was only a minute old when the WGC-based side took the lead, Jade Ryan firing home following a goalmouth scramble in the box.

Kayla Johnson had the first Saints effort which was saved before Ellie Lovelock whizzed a shot just past the far post.

Chances continued for both sides and Johnson and Jessica Cavaree went close again for the Lady Saints.

And with a minute to go until half-time they finally got their reward.

Lovelock won the ball just over the half-way line and sprinted away towards goal. Her shot was low across the face of the goal which beat the keeper and bounced in off the post.

Early in the second half Ellen Salter put over a great corner that flew across the six-yard box but without anyone getting a touch.

But within moments a quick break saw the hosts retake the lead, Laurie Marris rounding Lauren Croucher from a tight angle and firing home.

Six minutes later though it was 2-2.

Some good work on the left hand side of the box saw Lovelock beat two defenders and her cross was met by a powerful header from Kerry Twigg from ten yards.

Holly Rossingdon had a low shot from 20 yards saved but a mistake at the back on the slippery pitch allowed Manji Nder Atwal to nip in and make it 3-2.

That was on 64 minutes but the lead lasted just three minutes when Twigg met Johnson’s corner with a rifled finish into the roof of the net.

And with five minutes remaining St Albans finally got their noses in front.

Another Johnson corner was spilled by the keeper to the feet of Nicola Dark who prodded the ball over the line.

But with time running out Marris pounced for her second after another defensive slip.

Saints remain top of Beds & Herts Women’s Football League Division One and still unbeaten.

Their next game is a home match against fourth-placed Sharnbrook on February 25.
