HATFIELD Town’s joint-manager Darryn Stewart has refused to read the riot act to his squad despite seeing them fall to a 6-0 home defeat against Haringey Borough on Saturday.

The heavy loss sees The Blueboys right in the thick of a relegation battle in SSML Premier Division, third-bottom with 26 points from 29 games.

But Stewart, who manages the first-team alongside Kevin Pearman, has refused to criticise his players, and wants them to prove their Premier Division credentials over the coming weeks.

“We knew it was going to be a very difficult game; they are a strong and physical side who are also very good.

“But we contributed to our own downfall; to be 2-0 down in the first 10 minutes means you are always going to be chasing the game.

“To concede two goals both from corners was very disappointing.

“The lads’ heads went down, and then to come in 4-0 behind, it was pretty much game over.

“But we [Stewart and Pearman] went in at half-time and tried to pick the lads up; everyone was really down about being 4-0 behind.

“There was no point shouting and swearing, I just don’t think that would have helped at all.”
