London Colney 2 Bethnal Green United 1

LONDON Colney moved into the second round of the FA Vase after overcoming nine-man Bethnal Green at Cotlandswick.

The Blueboys started brightly but couldn't find an opener while at the other end Alistair Hill did well to tip over Alfred Kamara's free kick which had threatened to sneak in after the swirling wind got hold of it.

The Blueboys eventually broke the deadlock in the 19th minute thanks to a Shaun Murphy goal. Frankie Jowle curled over a free kick and Murphy sent a looping header over Ashley King and into the back of the net.

An effort from Marlon Campbell was pushed round the post by Hill and Khalin Jama saw his effort hit the top of the crossbar.

With only a minute to go to half time the visitors snatched an equaliser when Karl Blake's free kick was converted by Steven Willis. Both sides started the second half by missing chances before the game's turning point came in the 70th minute.

Hull took a quick throw to David Parkinson who went down in the box after being tugged by Anibola Olatunbosun and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Simmonds stepped up and drove the spot kick past King.

The match boiled over five minutes later when the visitors had two players sent off.

Russell Gallagher advanced into the box and as he tried to round King, the goalkeeper brought the Colney man down earning him a red card. In the commotion that followed, United's Anton Stephenson was also given his marching orders for foul and abusive language.

If that wasn't bad enough, the visitors also had their manager sent to the stands.

Despite their numerical advantage the Blueboys were unable to add to their tally but were happy enough with progression to the next round.

London Colney: Hill, Hull, Corran, Murphy, Dickie, Humbert, Jowle, Magwood, Parkinson, Simmonds, Gallagher. Subs not used: Danslow, Hudson, Butcher, McCafferty, Munn.

Danny Butcher scored the only goal of the game as London Colney beat second-placed Holmer Green 1-0 in the Division One Cup on Tuesday night.

Butcher netted in the 65th minute to seal the win and give the Blueboys their second cup win in a week.

Matt Hudson nearly gave the Blueboys the lead early on when his cross-cum-shot narrowly evaded the far corner of the net.

With the wind behind them in the second half the Blueboys scored what turned out to be the winner.

Frankie Jowle delivered a perfect free kick which was headed emphatically home by Butcher.

Butcher nearly grabbed a second but saw his shot deflected wide but just the one goal proved enough for the Blueboys to move into the next round.
