London Colney picked up just their second Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division win in 2018 after a 2-1 success over Hoddesdon Town at Cotlandswick.

That’s not to say they have struggled since the turn of the year but their seven league games have seen four draws as well as those two wins.

They had to do it the hard way though having been a goal down at half-time.

But first Laurence Vaughan cancelled out Aiden Critchley’s opener before Bobby Armstrong struck late on to claim all three points for the Blueboys.

Vaughan had the first chance of the game but his header from a Loren Maxwell cross was cleared off the line by Sam Reddy.

At the other end and Jack Metcalfe was quick off his line to block a shot from Connor Scully with his legs after the Hoddesdon player had burst clear into the box and then Critchley’s low drive crept just wide of the post.

But it was only a temporary reprieve for Colney as minutes later Hoddesdon took the lead.

Jordan Elderton sent over a high cross to the far post which seemed to be going out before Critchley raced in and squeezed the ball in from a tight angle despite the efforts of Jason Coughlan to clear.

The Blueboys pressed for a equaliser and had chances with Jack Mace, Dominic Morgillo and Joe Price all testing the Damien Farrow.

The keeper was busy after the break too as he saved a Zac Holding header and then faced a barrage of chances from Vaughan.

Eventually though the Blueboy got the upper hand and after receiving a pass from Armstrong, he drilled a low shot past Farrow and into the bottom corner.

The winner came very late in the game when Tobi Omotosho was brought down out by the corner flag.

It led to a scuffle with players from both sides getting involved as Vaughan waited to take the free-kick.

Reddy and Armstrong, who both seemed to be the ones trying to calm it down, were booked but eventually it clamed down which finally allowed Vaughan to swing the ball in.

And when he did it fell kindly for Armstrong who instantly swept the ball low past Farrow.

London Colney, who are now up to 10th in table, travel to Cockfosters on Saturday.
