Emily Caswell and Chloe Pettengell have become the first comprehensive school students to win a prestigious tennis competition.

The Year 10 girls represented Sandringham School at the U18 County Doubles Tournament, held at Royal Masonic School. Caswell and Pettengell played against a high caliber of opposition throughout the day in a round robin format.

In their first game they played St Albans High School B team and strung together a series of excellent shots to beat them 6-2 6-0. In their second game, they played against a very strong St Albans High School A team. However, the girls stepped up a gear with some fantastic serving and unreachable smashes to go on to win 6-2 6-1. Caswell called it the ‘best game we have ever played together’.

The duo went on to win the tournament and with that have become the first comprehensive school pairing to ever win this prestigious competition.

Sandringham head teacher Alan Gray said: “This is a fantastic achievement and the girls should be commended on their hard work and fantastic tennis skills. I know that they were ecstatic to win the competition and to become U18 County Doubles Tennis Champions.”
