The Friends of St Leonard’s Flamstead have taken the top prize in Ashtons’ ‘for life’s great causes’ charity fundraiser.
The charitable trust, which is dedicated to preserving the 900-year-old Grade I listed village church, received a cheque for £5,000.
Andrew Lambourne, Heritage Fundraising Coordinator, said: “Huge thanks to everyone who supported us, and especially to Ashtons for its charitable giving.
“We have to raise £250,000 of matched funding to support a Heritage Lottery bid to save 900 years of history including valuable medieval wall paintings, and this award really helps.
“The online poll is a great idea and has raised awareness of all the charities involved.”
Nearly 10,000 votes were cast by people keen for their favoured charity to secure a slice of the £10,000 prize pot.
Rennie Grove Hospice took the second prize of £3,000, while Willow Foundation won £2,000. The Ollie Foundation also took a bonus £1,000 after winning a separate prize draw.
The response to this year’s event has been so positive that Ashtons plan to run a similar event next year. If you would like your preferred charity to be shortlisted, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
