Demolition work is underway on the site of the former Harperbury Hospital, between Radlett and London Colney.

The huge scheme will see 206 homes built on the site of the former mental health facility, just off the B556.

The development will consist of a range of one to five bedroom homes, plus 72 affordable units, available for rent or purchase under shared ownership.

The site was once set to house the much-anticipated Harperbury Free School, which was controversially canned in 2016.

Developer Bloor Homes will give £1.4 million towards local healthcare, education and leisure facilities, as well as transport infrastructure.

Vanessa Macnee, Regional Sales Director for Bloor Homes South Midlands, said that the company was working closely with the local authority “to ensure our proposals are aligned with the needs of the community”.

She added: “Demolition and clearance work is progressing well and we look forward to being able to commence construction, with first occupations planned for 2019.”

Senior Planning Director David Joseph added: “Our focus isn’t just on providing quality homes and extra facilities for the community. We are committed to ensuring that there are suitable systems in place to accommodate the additional homes, which is why we are also investing in measures such as sustainable transport solutions.

“It has been a pleasure meeting with the local community throughout the planning process and we hope that they are as pleased with the final plans as we are.”

As part of the development Bloor Homes will contribute £128,000 towards local healthcare, £1.1 million to local education provision, £478,000 towards community libraries, £9,500 towards youth facilities and £31,000 to sustainable transport and travel plan monitoring. They will also help local football club St Albans Rangers improve their facilities.

Being ill sucks. No matter what’s got you down – the flu, a broken bone, diabetes, cancer – it’s a horrible place to be. Your body is weaker and less capable. The drugs you take mess with your mind and your moods and sometimes can make you feel even worse than when you started. Mental ill-health is no different. The brain is an organ, and like any organ, it doesn’t always function to the medical standard of “normal”. Mine certainly doesn’t.
