Four students at a girls school have won a prestigious gold engineering award.

The quartet from St Albans Girls School (STAGS) - Catriona Cadenhead, Amy Mistry, Naomi Peterson and Farzana Rahman - were mentored by county council highways staff as they designed and developed an integrated bus stop and multi-modal bus design.

The students’ work, which included design testing, construction, cost evaluation and research, was undertaken as part of the Engineering Education Scheme.

The project was also entered for a British Science Association CREST award and the students all received a Gold award.

Terry Douris, the county council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “I think we’ve found some engineers of the future as the standard of work has been exceptionally high.

“The students from St Albans Girls School deserve this gold award and are a credit to their schools and families.”

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
