Kids have been receiving sporty training for the St Albans 1.5k fun run in a bid to win the Schools Challenge this weekend.

There are cash prizes for the school that enters the most children to the race, which will be announced on the day.

Samuel Ryder Primary School has set up a breakfast and lunchtime club for students to build their confidence and stamina running long distance, and encourage them to enter the fun run.

Since it has become the most popular club at the school they have added a 400m race to their sports day.

Lisa Davies, head of the primary phase, said: “We were amazed at how firmly the children embraced the idea of taking part in the fun run but also the running clubs set up to help them.

“As always, the level of parental support for entering the fun run was huge and this lead to the children being so enthusiastic.”

This is the third year Samuel Ryder have set up the club, which laps around the school playing field.

She said: “This year we have had to put on additional clubs for the children as the numbers were so high.

“The running clubs have really allowed children to showcase their talent for running and I am thrilled that the children take so much enjoyment from it.”

The fun run is for children under 12, but children under eight must run with an adult.

Parents are also looking to start a sister club that prepares them for accompanying their children in the race.

Katie Foweraker, race director of St Albans Half Marathon, said: “One of the greatest things about this community event is that it has a lasting legacy, not only for the charities to which all proceeds are donated, but to these young children who have fun and feel motivated to get active, fit and healthy.

“It’s great to see so many children being inspired and we praise Samuel Ryder School for their efforts!”

Samuel Ryder is looking to partner with athletics clubs to encourage children to continue running after the fun run.

The 1.5k fun run, 5k, walking half marathon, wheelchair half marathon and half marathon are on Sunday 12 June, at Verulamium Park.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
