The St Albans Clock Tower will be opened this Friday by the Mayor to mark the start of the summer season.

The monument was visited last weekend by a group of lucky ballot winners for The Big Weekend, who climbed 93 steps to the top of the 64ft building to admire views of the city and beyond.

They were also able to see the Victoria clock mechanism on the second floor and Gabriel, the one-ton medieval bell, at the top of the tower.

The tower was built in the 1400s to assert the townspeople’s freedom from the Abbey.

The ballot winners were also given a goodie bag which included a selection of merchandise, information leaflets and a set of four Clock Tower and St Albans prints.

After Good Friday, the tower will be opened every weekend and bank holiday until September by volunteers from the St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society, and the Civic Society.
