Staff from a St Albans museum have been awarded for their “outstanding” schools programme by BBC TV presenter Lucy Worsley.

Verulamium Museum was given the Sandford Award for Excellence because of its education on the city’s Roman heritage.

Author and historian Lucy Worsley, who has fronted several BBC documentaries, handed the certificate over to the museum’s learning and interpretation officer Eleanor Payne and bookings officer Liz Gloyn.

The awards ceremony was held at the Fashion Museum and Assembly Rooms in Bath, Somerset.

Judges visited the museum last summer to watch children take part in interactive lessons about the Roman era.

Cllr Annie Brewster, porfolio holder for sports and culture, said: ““The Sandford Award is a very special honour. I am delighted for our Museums team which has developed a first class heritage learning scheme for schools.”

One of my favourite summer activities as a child was pond-dipping. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a fairly large pond in the garden and so my pond-dipping activities often extended over days and weren’t as much dipping as a thorough exploration of the life in the pond.
