Police are appealing for witnesses after a driver died in St Albans early this morning.

A 35-year-old man from Luton has died after the car he was driving came off the road.

The car, a red Vauxhall Zafira, was travelling away from St Albans on Oaklands Lane at 4am.

After the car came off the road, it collided with a raised bank and came to rest against a tree.

Police do not know how the car came off the road.

Officers and the ambulance service attended.

Sadly, a short time later the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or who believes they saw the vehicle in the area prior to the collision is asked to contact PC Paul Stanbridge from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Forensic Collision Investigation Unit via the 101 non-emergency number quoting ISR 136 of March 11.
