A teacher born and bred in St Albans has been named special needs education music teacher of the year by Classic FM.

Flis Kirk, who went to St Albans School for Girls and now teaches at The Valley School in Stevenage, picked up the accolade at a glittering ceremony at London Barbican.

She said: “I am truly honoured to have received this award. Working at The Valley School has taught me so much about the power of music and how important it is to offer young people, particularly those with special needs, the opportunity to excel, push themselves, find their voice and celebrate their achievements.”

She was nominated by school governor Helen Holford, and the headteacher, Corina Foster, for her work at the special needs school.

The judges remarked: “Her work with key stage three and four pupils with learning difficulties has transformed the life of the school and the lives of pupils, past and present.”
