ABOUT 40 shoppers and staff were evacuated when fire broke out in a Harpenden supermarket at the weekend.

Firefighters were called to Somerfield in Southdown Road at around midday on Sunday to find that the blaze in a food preparation area had already been put out by staff.

But the store was left heavily smoke-logged and the firefighters used ventilation equipment to clear the air. They had completed the operation at around 12.30pm.

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
