Local schoolgirls were honoured to attend Professor Stephen Hawking’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey.

Nicole Fletcher, Charlie Nejad, Megan Worsley, and Emma Beswetherick are all pupils from St Albans High School for Girls who went into London on June 15 to witness the ceremony and pay their respects.

The famous scientist went to the school between 1950 and 1953 - when it was co-ed until the age of 10.

Emma said: “It was a moving, inspirational service and brilliant celebration of his life. It was amazing to be part of such an historic event that I will remember forever.”

Nicole added: “Being able to celebrate all of Stephen Hawking’s achievements amongst his friends, family, and fellow scientists was an incredible experience and I’m very grateful that I was able to be a part of something so special.”

After the ceremony the students met TV personality Professor Brian Cox and astronaut Major Tim Peake.
