A St Albans musician has celebrated his last hoorah by scoring the hat trick - playing at the wedding for the third generation of one family.

About 60 years ago, Alan Sharp, 82, performed at his first wedding at a Queensbury Methodist Church - Vera walked down the isle to Wagner’s Bridal Chorus at her marriage to Walter Allen.

Then coincidentally, both organist Alan and the Allen family moved to St Albans and joined the Marlborough Road Methodist Church.

Their daughter, Frances Allen, was given away to Paul Bates along to Alan playing Jeremiah Clarke’s Trumpet Voluntary.

Almost 60 years later, Alan has just played at Frances and Paul’s daughter’s wedding. Alice Bates married Ash Noakes last weekend - she entered to Handel’s The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.

Frances said it was “such a special thing”. Alan added: “I thought it would be nice to finish my career with the same family which I started.”

Recently we, as a family (minus two of the kids), visited The Lodge RSPB reserve in Sandy, Bedfordshire. I had never been before, which is perhaps amiss of me as a birdwatcher as it is the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds or RSPB and only 45 minutes drive from home.
